I LOVE planning for Read Across America Week at my school! I always go off of March 2nd (Dr. Seuss’ Birthday) and make it a week long event. So this year it was held Monday, February 26th to March 2nd.
Here are some things that we did at my district! FIRST, I want to start by saying that I had wonderful planning help from a Second Grade teacher who shares an equal amount of passion for planning (and Pinterest) as I do. So a BIG thank you to her! (Thank you Becky!)
Throughout the week, we held D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) for 5 minutes! We also read a Dr. Seuss quote on the announcements to kick off each morning!
We decorated our lobby with various Dr. Seuss decorations, and our art teacher drew several Dr. Seuss characters! The students loved walking in every morning. You can find some of my favorite Amazon decorations below.
To get the students and staff excited, we have a “spirit week”. Here is a FREEBIE of the handout I created for the week! Please leave a comment, or email me if you would like me to email you a version to input your own dates!
We held a door decorating contest! On March 2nd, a classroom was chosen as the winner and were awarded books for each child in their class! Here is my door! The students needed to take part in the decorating, so each student decorated their own sock. Quick and simple!
The fox was hand drawn using poster board, the circles were cut out in various sizes, and the letters were created using HelloBigDeal by Jen Jones from Hello Literacy!
To wrap up our week of reading, we hosted a “Dr. Seuss Teacher Trivia,” and watched Horton Hears A Who!
The teachers in grades K-5 competed as grade level teams to win the Kahoot! of 10 questions about Dr. Seuss. Please email me if you are interested in the Kahoot! and I would gladly share it with you! Please note it was trivia targeted for teachers…not students.
The winning grade level team won books for their students from Scholastic!
We had SO much fun learning about different genres and all things Dr. Seuss! The biggest lesson we learned however, was the love of reading!
Some fun Read Across America Week Ideas are:
1. Guest Readers (community members, school staff, parents etc.)
2. Journey through various genres
3.Flashlight reading
4.Book projects
Happy Reading!
