How to make calming glitter jars: A strategy for Mindfulness
What you will need:
Food Dye– 1 to 2 drops per jar
Glitter Glue- one stick per mason jar OR 1 bottle of clear Elmer’s Glue per mason jar
Glitter- 1 to 2 tablespoons (you can use various glitter textures and sizes (starts, circles, shapes etc.)) ** I like to mix various glitter sizes and textures for an added visual!
Mason Jar with top
Boiling hot water
Step 1: Add the boiling hot water into the mason jar. Be sure to leave about 1/4 inch at the top of the jar.
Step 2: Pour the entire tub of glitter glue OR the entire bottle of Elmer’s Clear Glue into the mason jar slowly. You should see it melting or separating.
Step 3: Add 1 to 2 drops of food dye into the jar. Remember less is more because you will want to see the glitter easily.
Step 4: Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of your chosen glitter. I added two different types of glitter. (2 tablespoons of the fine traditional glitter and as much as my heart felt for the fun shaped glitter)
Step 5: Tightly seal the jar and shake all contents to mix it up.
Step 6: Unseal the lid and allow water inside to cool. Once it has cooled, glue the lid closed to seal contents!
Shake it up and Enjoy!
Create a calming corner in your classroom with these jars. Different rules may apply based on the age and grade level of the students. For example, with the younger grades I recommend having them hold the jar with two hands and after 3 shakes, they must return to their seat and be ready to take on what lies ahead in the day. You may also feel that you don’t want to set “rules” for the jars and just allow the students to use them when needed!
Here is a great video to represent the meaning of the jars: Just Breathe
