What student doesn’t love an exciting outcome and a game with some healthy competition?
As a literacy specialist, I work with students in grades K-5. I am currently teaching Author’s Purpose to my 4th grade group! After two lessons on the topic, the kiddos were doing so well I thought it was time to switch things up!
Here is how it went… I split the kids up into two groups/teams. Then using this amazing FREE resource from TPT from “Fun In First with Miss B.”
I reflected this to be a document I could show on my ClearTouch board (similar to a SMARTBoard). This made it easier to do it as a whole group, game-like lesson.
A student would pick a category “Persuade”, “Inform”, or “Entertain.” They would then pick a title they believed fell under that category. The titles are provided with the resource!
If they chose correctly, they received a point for their team, if they got it wrong…HERE IS WHERE THE FUN COMES IN! They would have to insert their face into the game, and then turn the wheel one time!
Getting an answer wrong, gave a point to the other team! This stopped my students from purposely answering wrong in order to turn the pie wheel. Some REALLY just wanted to get pie’d! Honestly, once they got an answer wrong, they were nervous to get a pie in the face but were great sports for their peers and we had a lot of laughs!
It was a great way to review the topic! The kids talked about it for days after, and we captured some great pictures!
Give it a try! Feel free to contact me with questions!
