I started doing this when I became a Second Grade teacher, however, I think this is a great idea for any grade level! “Camp Learned-A-Lot” was a way for me to review content at the end of the year, but make it a fun day! The end of the year is filled with so much chaos and excitement, why not add one more thing to the fun!
I have always wanted to flip my classroom, but didn’t want to break the bank doing it. Let me share with you easy ideas and links so that you can create this fun day in your own classroom!
For Camp Learned-A-Lot day, I sent a notice home to parents asking if the students could bring in a blanket and a hand-held flashlight. An optional choice could also be to wear pajamas and bring in a stuffed animal. The blankets and flashlights were perfect for reading time and I allowed the students to use their flashlights while completing work independently! It was a great motivation for them throughout the day.
Here is what you will need…
–tablecloths ( I was able to buy 5 for my 5 groups, and I cut them wherever needed to fit appropriately)
-handmade fire (created using felt and stuffing)
-construction paper (to create table lanterns, stars/moon, logs for fire)
–finger flashlights (for the students who didn’t bring in a flashlight)
Camp Learned-A-Lot Set-Up…
For the student desk area, each table was covered with the picnic tablecloths and had a “camping” theme coloring sheet for morning work. Some tables had lanterns made from the plastic cups while others had a paper fire on them (I made it look like a small fire pit in the middle).
To make the paper lantern, take a plastic cup, tea light and black construction paper. Cut the construction paper into a strip to create the handle. Glue the handle on the bottom of the cup and place the tea light underneath!
Extra additions for Camp Learned-A-Lot decor…
I wanted to add a starry night sky to our campground. So, I used construction paper, string and clothespins! I did this over our carpet whole group area, which is also where I placed the handmade fire pit.
This handmade fire pit was made out of felt and stuffing. The rocks were pained to add a charcoal affect and the logs were made from bulletin board paper!
Using plastic table cloths, I created two large tents for students to take turns reading under throughout the day! I taped the bottom to the floor to hold the shape of the tent. The tops of the tents are clotheslined and secured with a clothespin.
Students enjoyed a “smore’s” snack at the end of the day while reading in the dark with their flashlights! I grabbed “golden grahams smore’s remix“.
Learning Activities…
For review, the students were given a packet that I created by compiling several math, reading, writing, phonics, and spelling activities that we learned throughout the year. They were able to work with a partner at various times during the day and use their flashlights!
At the beginning of each subject, I created an anchor chart that said “What we learned this year in…(insert subject).” Then as a whole group we brainstormed all the things we learned during the year in each subject. It was a fun way to celebrate all we have learned! We also had independent reading time with flashlight reading and they wrote a short story about camping.
Books we read by the campfire…

S is for S’mores by Helen Foster James
