I love New Years in the classroom! It is a great time to review your management routines, school expectations, classroom expectations, set new goals and reflect on how far your students have come! Give them something to celebrate and something new to work towards!
This New Years Activity for the classroom is perfect for any grade level and a great way to welcome your class back and refocus!
New Years Activity:
*UPDATED EVERY YEAR
This activity comes with an anchor chart header, and “glows and grows” reflection worksheet for several grade levels and learners.
I love to do this activity as a whole group and then lead it into an individual activity! I also like to combine it into our classroom management system for the new year.
After creating a classroom anchor chart and brainstorming our classroom grows (things we can work on), we choose one to improve on each week. When I catch students doing the goal, I add a pom to the jar and continue to do so throughout the week. I then decide to change the goal or continue to work on it if not fully mastered!
“Glow” Ideas:
“Glows” are things that the students have done really well so far throughout the year. It’s how they reflect on how far they have come and you can also compliment them on what they are doing well!
Some ideas could be: appropriate voice level, names on their papers, teamwork, great hallway walking, respectful to peers, share their toys, take turns, keep the classroom tidy, etc.
“Grow” Ideas:
“Grows” are the things that the students could improve on. It is a way for them to gather ideas by self-reflection and honesty but also it gives me an opportunity to help them reflect on my expectations for them.
Some ideas could be: appropriate voice level inside the classroom, following directions the first time given, being kind, quiet in the hallways, respectful to lunch monitors, asking 3 before me, etc.
I hope you enjoy this New Year, New Goals activity for the classroom! I have used it in my kindergarten classroom and my Second grade classroom! Both levels have loved it!
