Diverse Reads for the classroom:
Ruby Finds A Worry by Tom Percival: This book really spoke to the “worrier” in me! It talks about what to do when a worry won’t leave us, and that we aren’t alone. I plan to read this book at the beginning of the year, and discuss the worries my students may have about school and the changes we are facing.
The Buddy Bench by Patty Brozo: A book to go with a project I have always wanted to do with my students. This explains what a “buddy bench” is and how to use it at recess time! “Buddy Bench” is a great introduction of what students can do when they find themselves without a friend to play with or they see someone who needs a friend.
Say Something by Peter Reynolds: My classroom library holds MANY Peter Reynolds books! When I saw this suggestion, I had to add it to my collection! It encourages the young and old to use the voice they were given for brilliant ideas, injustices they see, inspirations and more. We all have a voice and we need to be brave and use it! This book will lead to so many wonderful topics and meaningful conversations with our students. It would be a great idea to make an anchor chart of “say something” ideas and ways to carry out our voice.

Except When They Dont by Laura Gehl: A book that empowers kids to be who they are! This book celebrates individuality and encourages children to play with whatever toy they want! A perfect pairing for introduction to playtime and toys in the classroom.
The Boy with Big, Big Feelings by Britney Winn Lee: Feelings. Emotions. Topics that are so important to talk about with our littles. This book brings those big emotions to life with illustrations and kid-friendly words. It let’s boys and girls know that it is okay to feel those emotions they have inside.
Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry: This book also has an adorable short film to pair with it. A story about a relationship between a father and a daughter. The father shows his willingness to try and help his daughter with new hairstyles. Zuri wants to find a special hair style and together, they do. Zuri learns her hair is one of the many special qualities she holds.
